Moving to a New Home: How to Maintain Your Sanity
Podcast: Play in new window | Download
Ya’ll, we all know moving is Stressful (with a capital S) and it can be mentally and physically hard, but if you do it the right way, you can make the process easier for yourself. I, personally, love moving to a new home. The possibilities are endless when it comes to decorating the home, which is the best part, but in order to do so, you have to get yourself moved in first. Here are a few ways to help maintain your sanity during the process.
Get Rid Of Junk: Declutter
If you have “junk” such as old furniture that you are not taking with you, pieces of clothing that you do not wear anymore, or appliances that you are going to replace, get rid of them BEFORE moving day. Moving to a new home is like a fresh start and I like to get rid of as much as possible. It’s amazing what we accumulate under kitchen counters and at the top of our closets. And do we dare bring up the basement? Yeah, I didn’t think so. But here’s what you should do, channel your inner Marie Kondo and ask yourself does the item “spark joy”? If not, toss it out or put it in your donate pile. Trust me, you will feel so much better getting rid of the “junk” that’s weighing you and possibly your moving van down.
Plan Out Your New Rooms
This is the best part to me – planning out the new rooms before decorating and making a house a home is a passion of mine. When your offer has been accepted on a home, go back and make a layout of the home and each room. Pictures are always helpful, as well. This way, you can look back on your layout and pictures when you are buying decorations and/or furniture for your home. Start with the basics – are you painting the interior of the home? Choose the paint color before buying any new furniture or decor pieces. Are you getting a new couch? If so, be sure to measure the space before ordering, if you have access to the home (inspection day is a great day to do all of this!). Planning out your space in advance will save you a tremendous amount of time and stress once you move in. Of course, making a house a home does take time, so don’t feel rushed – I just like getting the big things out of the way (paint, big furniture items, appliances, etc.) before moving day.
Hire Movers
This right here is my biggest tip on maintaining your sanity during a move. Not only will it save you mental stress but also physical. I always recommend hiring movers such as Atlanta Peach Movers. They are Georgia’s premier full-service moving company with over 30 years of proven experience, and thousands of satisfied customers.
They have moved people locally, regionally, nationally, and even internationally, so they have experienced it all and know how to navigate even the toughest of moving jobs. Atlanta Peach Movers believes in doing a great job at a fair price without any hidden charges or fees. They will also come on-site to you for a free estimate of what your moving services might cost.
Last but not least, Atlanta Peach Movers prides themselves on their white glove moving service in Atlanta. They take whatever extra steps are necessary to make sure that your special items arrive at your new place in the same condition as when they left. They can even pack and unpack your boxes for you, or safely store any boxes or furniture pieces you can’t take with you to your new home. With them there are no hidden fees. The price they quote is the price you pay. For a free estimate on their white glove moving services, give them a call at 770-447-5121.”
Hire A Cleaning Crew
If you are able to hire a cleaning crew to deep clean your new home before you move in, do it. Unfortunately, when people move out of a home, most are not the type who willingly offer to clean it, or hire a cleaning crew to deep clean it for you. Even if they do, I promise, you will want to hire your own cleaning crew to give it a really good deep clean, just so you know that there are not any cobwebs (or anything else) in the nooks and crannies of your new home. When you hire the crew, see if they can come on closing day, or the first full day that you own the home. That way, they are there before any of your furniture is moved in. If they cannot, schedule them to arrive the morning of the move, before the movers drop off all of your furniture and boxes.
Just imagine, walking into your new freshly cleaned home, that not only looks but smells amazing and being able to immediately get started unpacking and settling in. Now that’s a huge weight lifted off your shoulders.
Relax On The Day Of
That’s right! If you have followed my other steps, then you should be able to relax on moving day, which is such a great feeling! Take a day off work, grab a coffee, and have a slow morning. This way, you are available if anything comes up, but if it doesn’t, you are just able to enjoy yourself. In addition, if you are moving from a home that you loved, it allows you to give yourself a chance to properly say goodbye to it instead of rushing out, stressed as can be. Plan in advance so that you can keep your sanity on moving day – you will be very glad you did!
